Carefully harvested in Karlsey, Iceland

Norður & Co. is located on the tiny Karlsey Island in the magical Breiðafjörður Bay - a spectacular landscape with shallow waters, small fjords and a myriad of reefs. With its extensive algal forests, seaweed and extreme biodiversity, Breiðafjörður is often referred to as the underwater rainforest of the North. The fjord's clear and clean seawater has been an important source of food for the Icelanders through the ages.

Further Description

In the old days in the North there was a mermaid named Alda. Her eyes were green and her hair was long and wild. She would sing with such a melancholic voice for fishermen in their boats that they lost their minds. The only one undisturbed by her haunting melodies was a young fisherman called Brander. Hardworking and poor, he never stopped fishing, only lit bonfires floating in the darkness around his small boat. The lights né only attracted fish but also Alda and every night she came a little closer to the dancing flames. The moment Brander's eyes fell upon the mermaid he jumped from his boat and vanished into the ocean. Even today Alda's singing may be heard on quiet nights in the area of Breiðafjörður. Geothermal production method since 1753 Our unique geo-thermal production method was first tried in 1753 and has since been carefully preserv- ed in Iceland and Denmark. The savory and mystical Arctic Sea water is pumped into open pans where it is slowly heated with water from natural hot springs. This sustainable process leaves behind no carbon dioxide - only fresh, crunchy flakes of Norður Salt.
