Further Description

Traidcraft Fair Trade In 2009, The Co-op partnered with leading Fair Trade organisation Traidcraft to bring to market the UK's first Fair Trade charcoal. There are no specific standards for Fair Trade charcoal and so we have formed this unique partnership to support burners and workers in Namibia. Since then, we have raised thousands of pounds of premiums to fund projects to benefit charcoal workers and their communities in Namibia. Water is scarce in Namibia. Most people lack access to running tap water, or have to travel long distances to the closest water source. The Jumbo Charcoal workers identified the need for accessible, safe and available water and installed four communal taps in the communities where the workers live. "I am so happy I no longer have to wake up in the early morning hours to queue up for water. I am a father and sometimes I wake up as early as 4 a.m. to ensure my child has bathed and on time for school. I feel very happy that I no longer have to walk 1 or 2 kilometres to fetch water - Thank you Fair Trade". Efraim Kariko, a charcoal worker living at Nau-Aib settlement in Okahandja.
